During the summer, sunny windows make your air conditioning work two to three times harder. By using a few inexpensive energy-efficient measures, you can reduce your energy bills by 10% to 50%.
Energy Saving Tips:
During the heating season, keep window shades and blinds on your south-facing windows open during the day to allow sunlight to enter your home (and warm-up rooms) and closed at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows. Keep windows on the south side of your house clean to maximize solar gain during heating season. Rule of thumb for thermostat savings: For each degree you lower your thermostat in winter, you can save about 3 percent on your heating bill.
During the cooling season, keep south and west-facing window coverings closed during the day to prevent solar gain. Install window shades or blinds with a white surface facing out to reflect heat away from the house. Each degree that you raise the thermostat on your cooling system typically saves 2% on your cooling bill. Energy experts recommend setting your thermostat at 78 degrees F or higher. Don't let a room air conditioner bake in the sun. Room air conditioners work best when kept cool. Installing the unit in a north-facing wall is ideal. Another option is to take advantage of shade from trees.
