Blackout Blinds’ Original Purpose: To Black Out Light from Windows During War Time
Blackout Blinds or Blackout Shades were first introduced in England during World War II, in the colors of black or dark green. They were made of a heavy canvas fabric to block out any light from the windows that could be observed by enemy war combatants, particularly airplanes. After the war, manufacturers found a way to block light in such a way, that the heavy material and dark colored blinds were no longer necessary. Soon they were used in the consumer market for various purposes.
Blackout Blinds Now Have Multiple Purposes
Today, you can use Blackout Blinds in your nursery so your sleeping baby will not be disturbed during the daytime. If you work the nightshift, using blackout blinds allows for uninterrupted sleep. Researchers have found that total darkness can be beneficial as it helps restore hearts and improve immune systems. Restful sleep can also help one feel more refreshed and energetic. Your home office and media room also are a great place for blackout blinds, so presentations of all kinds, from Power Points or slides, to watching a game, are viewed easily, without disruption from daylight. Alternatively, you just might prefer the look of a romantic, dimly lit room during the peak of the day.
Our Blackout Blinds come in a variety of colors and textures; and are energy efficient. And they come in 5 distinct styles:
Custom-Fit Blinds Are Easy to Mount
Keep in mind, when mounting blinds on the inside of the window casing, a little light will seep around the sides of the blinds. To minimize light seepage, order the blinds as an outside mount, and add at least 1-1/2” on each side to cover the window fully. As always, our Blackout Shades are simple to install for every level of Do-It-Yourselfers.
